Listen to Winds

Date: 26-01-2018 Friday 8pm

Venue: Dom Pedro V Theatre

Programme:
Poulenc : Sonata for Horn, Trumpet and Trombone, FP 33
Brahms : Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Op. 115
Poulenc : Sextet for Piano and Winds, FP 100

Although string quartets are the most popular form of chamber music, woodwind or brass music are equally prevalent. This concert presents: Clarinet Quintet, a representative work in Brahms’ later years that engages a melodic yet melancholic clarinet and a lyrical, lingering string quartet to give off an autumnal mood suiting the composer’s mood at old age after his avowed retirement; and Sonata for Horn, Trumpet and Trombone, as well as Sextet for Piano and Winds by 20th century French composer Francis Poulenc. Poulenc’s two chamber pieces are a fusion of refined and restrained neoclassical style with rich jazz elements popular in his times.
